Publisher’s description: Collateral was born in 2016 and publishes poetry, creative nonfiction, fiction, and visual art concerned with the impact of violent conflict and military service beyond the combat zone. Many great journals publish battle stories, but Collateral seeks to create a platform for the lasting effects of war outside of combat. Push us to see the complex perspectives of military family members, veterans, civilians, refugees, immigrants, survivors, activists, witnesses. We're interested in reading all interpretations of this mission, and we especially encourage submissions from BIPOC, women, and artists creating within groups marginalized by the majority. We charge no fees and read year-round. The reading period for our fall issues end on September 1, and our spring reading period ends on March 1. We publish twice a year on May 15 and November 15.
Occasionally, Collateral facilitates local readings and workshops; we are located in several cities across the country and our editors are engaged in their communities. We are an online journal run solely by volunteers who are directly and indirectly impacted by military life. Past contributors include Marilyn Nelson, Humaira Abid, Jehanne Dubrow, Rena Priest, Juan J. Morales, B.A. Van Sise, Anita Lakshmi Powell, and more.
