Publisher's description: Iron City Magazine strives to remind the general public that prisoners can make meaningful contributions to our shared communities. So often, this potential is forgotten or overshadowed by prisoners’ crimes. Prisoners are, first and foremost, people. Validating prisoners’ humanity through writing and art encourages a culture of understanding and transformation. The incarcerated own stories and views worthy of sharing. Iron City Magazine highlights these stories in a way more permanent than a private journal. We welcome submissions from current and former prisoners, prison volunteers, prison staff, and family and friends of prisoners.
Current and former prisoners may submit work on any topic. Prison volunteers, family, friends, and staff should submit only work on memories, perspectives, or insights related to mass incarceration.
*We do not encourage writing or art that is graphically violent or sexually explicit or that discusses individuals' particular crimes or drug use. We want our magazine to pass through prison security as well as serve the general public.
